OVERBOARD - Remakes! What's the deal with the SUBtitles?!

  Kurt Russell & Goldie Hawn

OVERBOARD synopsis - After a spoiled, wealthy yacht owner is thrown overboard and loses her memory, a mistreated employee convinces her that she is his working class wife.

Writer, Leslie Dixon, was on board for the 2018 remake, so the film happily retains the original concept, [including some of the original dialogue]. The noticeable difference to the remake of OVERBOARD was the gender swap of the main characters and their family. [ChatterBox Divas has already addressed the differences /similarities for the films - REMAKES: Episode 121, so I will not be listing those here.]

But... "What's the deal with the SUBtitles?!"

We did a deep dive into the cultural changes in filming the remake - and found this helpful information.

                                                   Eugenio Derbez & Anna Faris
Eugenio Derbez not only starred in Overboard, but was the film's producer as well. He states in an interview with Dallas News online:
"The natural thing is for the Latino to play the carpet cleaning guy. So, we switched the roles to break stereotypes. It was important for the Latino community, because I've been trying to change the image of Latinos in this country. Every time I received an offer for a movie in Hollywood, it was for playing a narco or criminal or a gang member -- or a gardener. So I was tired of the same thing. And I said, now I have the possibility to make a change and I want to dignify more Latinos by playing this type of role. Flipping the roles avoids a direct comparison with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. And also, nowadays it feels better - imagine having a guy kidnap a woman and making her work?!  It would be kind of rude, so it feels more authentic - more fresh."

Eugenio Derbez is credited as being a Mexican actor, comedian and filmmaker. He is star, writer, director, producer and creator of some of the most popular Spanish language TV shows of all time. Derbez has been labeled a figurehead for the success in crossover, bilingual studio comedy. His 2013 feature film INSTRUCTIONS NOT INCLUDED (director, star and co writer) became the most successful Spanish film in the US.

OVERBOARD was produced by MGM, Lionsgate and Pantelion Films. Hollywood was beginning to recognize a growing entertainment need in its Hispanic audiences. They were becoming the fastest growing moving going audience as well as loyal DVD customers. James M. McNamara, (former chief executive of Telemundo) current chairman of Pantelion Films, knows that Latino audiences do not necessarily see themselves 'reflected in Hollywood movies.' [wiki] The studio wants to avoid the cliche'd, typical stereotyped images of life and culture.

Pantelion Films, the first major Latino Hollywood Studio, was created in 2010 to provide Hispanic moviegoers with exciting, original films.  The studio's mission was to utilize talented Latino writers, actors and directors in creating material that would speak to assimilated and Spanish dominate Hispanic audiences alike. OVERBOARD's dialogue is duo lingo - thus - the subtitles! [taken from Vulture News - online]
